Artist's Statement & Bio
My love of art goes all the way back to my childhood, when I developed a strong artistic ability at a very young age. My early artwork consisted mostly of pencil or ink drawings. When it came time to head to college, I pursued a B.A. in Advertising Design. While the focus there was commercial art, the program included a foundation of required fine art classes such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and photography. The two photography classes I took during college in the early 1980s really cast in cement my lifelong love for that medium.
I have worked in the commercial art industry to this day as both a graphic designer and website designer. But all the while I have continued to pursue fine art—mostly in the form of photography along with some drawing and sketching. Several attempts, over the years, to teach myself to paint had ended in frustration.
In 2014 I decided to take on the painting challenge once more, and began taking some local painting classes. The classes I took enabled me to move past the initial hurdle of learning to control the medium for the first time in my life, and my skills continued to strengthen and evolve in both acrylic and watercolor over the next few years. This pursuit of painting culminated in a show of my work alongside that of my great-grandfather's work at the Yarmouth History Center in 2018. At that point in time, I decided to set aside my painting efforts, and returned to my love of photography. Only this time, I added medium and large format to my photographic pursuits. I even set up a darkroom in my home and began developing my own black and white film for the first time since my college years.
I have been a member of the Community House Artists in Yarmouth, Maine since 2016, and my work has been shown in many local venues over the years. A selection of my photographs are on permanent display at InterMed in Yarmouth.
